To address the needs for a more modern building and equipment for existing services at the Mater hospital for increasing patient needs.

DETAILS
The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, in Dublin, Ireland has been taking care of adult patients for over 150 years. In 1998 Scott Talon Walker Architects were appointed as the main design and build team alongside YRM Architects medical planning sub-consultants for the new hospital development. The site is being developed on a constrained inner city campus immediately adjacent to an important acute hospital and a renowned private hospital.

Originally it was proposed to relocate the Temple Street Children’s Hospital but through the evolution of the project, it was identified that Mater site had potential to be a National Paediatric Hospital and so the hospital development was designed to share many important services with the co-located children’s hospital. The scope of the development had to be substantially increased in order to release lands for the National Paediatric Hospital.

The project is currently valued at €158 million, and is one of the largest and most advanced healthcare projects ever undertaken in Ireland. The hospital will feature 12 operating theatres, emergency department, outpatients’ clinic, radiology department, intensive care and high dependency units and 120 single ensuite inpatient bedrooms, which will help to prevent hospital-acquired infections.

The hospital was completed in the first quarter of 2012 and due to be fully open by May 2013. The construction uses Securistyle’s Sterling hinges which are the perfect choice for unrivalled weather sealing and are covered by Securistyle’s 12 year guarantee.
